university island in Venice
Poveglia Island (Venice)

Poveglia has a particular charm due to its position in the Laguna and the suggestion of its ruins invaded by the vegetation. The poetry of this landscape is an architectonic tale about different functions and the abandon. The University is one more chapter of this tale. The new complex must be functional and energy efficient, so it is thought that the best option is to unify all the program in a new building that has been generated from the expansion of the existing architectonical matrix that is found to be well oriented along the cardinal points.
The existing buildings that now are in ruin, are fixed by a conservative external restoration that ensures they suffer the least alteration. Suddenly they are adapted to host some thematic gardens thanks to the insertion of some new structures.
The new University building is developed along the main axes and is merged into the landscape and the wood.
The interior space is directly bonded with the close landscape and also with all the Lido and the Laguna thanks to the perimetral glasswalls of the new building that branches out and melts with the island.
The University external walls are made of glass, in order to use a venetian traditional material and to give a total transparency to the building. From inside you can see the trees and the Laguna, from outside you can see the interiors of the University. This transparency is reflected also in its architectural permeability: the external path is interlaced with the internal one. So it is possible to walk in the whole island without entering the building and in the building without going outside. The presence of the new building is sober and homogeneous in every direction. Only the north-west facade (that looks to Venice) in higher in order to emphasize the cultural and physical link between the University of Poveglia and this city.
