W.H.O. HEADQUARTERS
Genève (Swiss)
competition
with Juan Socas
IDEA
The competition guidelines asked to design a 22.000m2 extension near the existing World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva without a strong visual interference with the old one that is considered an important national monument.
The proposal is an underground building that is developed around 8 big courtyards that offers not only light and air but also a functional organization. The extension is connected to the existing building at the -1 level where there are also the auditoriums and the multi-functional areas. The offices are placed from -2 to -4 floor. Around each courtyard there is always a director’s office with 13-14 offices for his subordinates and a big open space office. The perimetral walls of each working group are glassed in order to offer the natural enlightenment also in the corridors.
The underground construction permits the visual conservation of the existing building view and of the landscape. Furthermore the earth constant temperature guarantees a minor cost for the air conditioning.
