sarca tower
Milan
preliminary project
IDEA
The project is placed in Milan in an area characterized by the presence of an old building once used as a water tank that now is dismissed. The building is now strongly degraded and abandoned so the Milan Municipality has given it to the University of Milan that has organized its restore in 3 phases. the first one, already finished, has been the external restore of the tower. The second one comprehends the internal restore of the tower until the level +4.9m and of the entire little house. The detailed project of this part is already legalized and ready to be built. The third phase is the subject of this project and it is basically the creation of a new little external multi purpose pavilion and the internal design of the tower until the level +29.4m. The new building is characterized by a a sober perfile conceptually inspired by the strongholds (or bastions) that were build from the XV century in front of the ancient castles that had become obsolete after the arrival of the new weapons. In the XVII also the Sforza Castle of Milan was upgraded by 8 triangular bastions. In analogy with that, the existing building (which is decorated like the Sforza Castle) will have its bastion.
Even if the strongholds were realized with powerful walls without any windows, the cultural bastion of the Sarca Tower is made with glass walls and it is opened to public and instead of rejecting the enemies attacks, it invites people to enter it and takes advantage of its cultural offer.
The new building is connected to the existing one by an underground passage (also the Sforza Castle has them) that leads to a 7m high hall where the staircase and the lift are placed.
That passage deter, mines also the spatial and functional symbiosis between the old and the new.
